About the local area

As far as we’re concerned, the Garfagnana is one of Italy’s best-kept secrets. No matter where you go, this authentic region continues to surprise you with hidden spots, breathtaking views and pure tranquillity. Hike through the many nature parks, explore the charm of Lucca or Florence and be amazed by the impressive caves that make this area so unique.

What to do in the area?

More than you could possibly discover in one holiday! From active day trips to cultural highlights and hidden gems — below you’ll find our personal favourites. ✨

Visit our favorite cities

Camporgiano

This is the charming village where our campsite is located. In just 15 minutes on foot you’ll find yourself in the centre of Camporgiano, where you’ll find everything you need: a supermarket, bakery, launderette, pharmacy and several cosy restaurants.

On Friday and Saturday evenings, it’s especially nice to stop by the wine bar on the village square for a drink.

Castelnuovo di Garfagnana

Just a 10-minute drive from the campsite lies the main town of the Garfagnana — the lively heart of the region. It’s a wonderful place where locals from surrounding villages do their daily shopping and where there is always something happening.

Every Thursday, the centre transforms into a cheerful maze of market stalls during the traditional weekly market, held here since 1430.

Barga

Perched high on the hill between Lucca and Castelnuovo di Garfagnana lies one of Italy’s most beautiful villages: the artist town Barga. Famous for its creative atmosphere, it boasts several galleries showcasing the work of local and international artists. The impressive cathedral overlooking the valley is absolutely worth a visit.

Barga is also home to wonderful restaurants serving delicious Tuscan dishes. And if you visit in July, you can experience the renowned Barga Jazz Festival, when live bands fill every corner of the town — a lively event you’ll never forget.

A visit to Barga feels like a journey through art, culture and true Italian charm.

Lucca

Over the years we’ve fallen a little in love with this city… Lucca offers that rare mix of charm, tranquillity and vibrancy. The atmosphere is wonderfully relaxed, and because the centre is largely car-free, it feels like wandering through an open-air museum. Between the picturesque streets you’ll find countless shops, terraces and restaurantsmand throughout the year many cultural events are held.

Lucca is also the birthplace of Giacomo Puccini, and his music lives on here. Beautiful Puccini concerts are played regularly in various churches — highly recommended.

And the best part? You can travel to Lucca extremely easily by train from our campsite. The station is located right next to the property, so you can reach the city centre without stress or parking hassle.

Visiting in June or July? Then you’ll witness the iconic Lucca Summer Festival, when the world’s biggest artists perform live on the city’s central square. An unforgettable experience.

Cinque Terre

A visit to the Cinque Terre is an experience you’ll never forget. The five colourful villages built into the cliffs above the bright blue sea look almost unreal. Narrow streets, spectacular hiking trails and picture-perfect viewpoints — this is Tuscany and Liguria at their finest.

The Cinque Terre are also very easy to reach by train from the campsite. Travel comfortably along the coast and use a day ticket to hop on and off wherever you like; no crowds, no traffic and no searching for parking.

A day trip to the Cinque Terre feels like a mini-holiday within your holiday.

Florence

A true must-see. There’s little more that needs to be said; Florence speaks entirely for itself.

And the best part: you can reach Florence just as easily by train from the campsite. No traffic, no parking stress — simply board the train and arrive straight in the heart of the city. Perfect for a day filled with art, culture and Tuscan charm.

The most beautiful caves in Europe

A highly recommended trip in the Garfagnana mountains is a visit to the Grotta del Vento, one of the most impressive caves in Europe. Even the drive there is worth it: along the way you pass the striking Eremo di Calomini, a monastery carved directly into the rock — a magical blend of nature and history.

The villages Vagli di Sotto and Vagli di Sopra are also fascinating to explore. These are the oldest settlements in the area, and in the reservoir nearby lies the mysterious Paese Fantasma — the “ghost village”. When a dam was built in the 1940s and 50s, the inhabitants left and the village was slowly submerged.

From time to time the lake is drained for maintenance and the sunken village reappears. And soon… it will happen again! A rare chance to see this remarkable piece of history with your own eyes.

Marble quarries

Our region is world-famous for its marble. A visit to one of the quarries is an absolute must. Discover how the marble is extracted, learn about the ancient traditions and enjoy incredible panoramic mountain views.

In the mountains of Minucciano lies a particularly impressive quarry that you can visit on a beautiful hike. Here you can see up close how marble is cut straight from the rock; a fascinating process.

Feeling adventurous? You can also take a 4x4 off-road tour right through the marble quarries: A spectacular experience deep inside the mining area, with views normally reserved for the workers themselves.

Food & Wine

There are plenty of wonderful restaurants to discover in the region. Of course, you can enjoy a delicious meal in our own restaurant, but there’s much more to try nearby.

Within walking distance is Cantina Bravi, a charming winery and restaurant where you can dine under the veranda overlooking the vineyards. Their weekly wine tasting is a must-try!

A bit further away, in Giuncugnano, you’ll find Agriturismo Cilla, an authentic farm with cattle and an unforgettable view of the Apuan Alps. Here you eat whatever is freshly prepared; rustic, honest and incredibly tasty.

Another recommendation: Il Pozzo in Pieve Fosciana, perfect for lovers of traditional Tuscan cuisine.

Hiking

The area offers countless hiking trails: along the river, through the forests or across rugged mountain terrain — sore legs guaranteed, but absolutely worth it! Several nature reserves surround the campsite, offering endless hiking possibilities.

Choose a walk through an ancient beech forest or follow a ridge with phenomenal views of the Apennines and the Apuan Alps. Our weekly sunset hike is a must-do: a magical evening walk you’ll remember forever.

For avid hikers, we also have GPX routes available on Komoot.

Beach

The journey to the coast is an experience in itself. You drive along a beautiful mountain road and through tunnels carved into the rock, with the views becoming more impressive by the minute. Eventually, you reach a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the immense marble quarries and the sea — a breathtaking sight.

On the coast you can choose between several seaside towns, such as Forte dei Marmi or Marina di Pietrasanta. The beaches here are lined with stylish beach clubs and restaurants where you can rent sunbeds and umbrellas and enjoy a delicious lunch. Beach Club Flavio even welcomes dogs. A few free beaches can be found on the far north and south sides of Forte dei Marmi.

On your way back, we highly recommend stopping for an aperitivo in the charming town of Pietrasanta, the artistic capital of Versilia and of marble craftsmanship. Over the years, this medieval town has become an open-air museum filled with galleries, sculptures and world-class contemporary art.
